 After creating ripples in Pakistan’s fashion industry from Islamabad for the last 12 years, the Sobia Nazir label is now also at the prominent end of women’s fashion all over the UK, US and more recently at the Dubai International Fashion Week.

Renowned and celebrated for her prêt and couture line and famous for giving her bridals a glamorous and individualistic feel, the designer has now come up with her lawn collection this season.

"It’s the first time I have come out with my lawn prints. My basic inspiration was the weather in which the collection is put on show, that is, spring, and hence I have used a lot of colours and butterflies," said Sobia.

The collection comprises six colourful prints in gloriously brilliant shades from the vast colour palette named Acid Vines, Fantasy Garden, ’70s Vibes, Urban Chic, Circular Illusion and Ethnic Modernity. All the prints are available in three colours except Acid Vines which is available in four. The hues range from lighter and darker shades of blue and green, dark purples to muted pinks and from loud and pale oranges to shiny yellows.

The collection is fresh and amazingly done, uniquely styled and one that captures the mood, personality and taste of women — but then it’s not what we haven’t seen before. One does hope to see finer work from Sobia Nazir next season.

Maintaining a garden in an ocean front location is not all blooming hibiscus and scented plumeria. Extreme conditions such as high winds and drought can play havoc on the sturdiest landscape. When planning your ocean front garden, you need to do you homework. Here are some flowers that love to bloom in the toughest of environments.

Rugosa Rose: This Siberian native knows all about tough climates. the Rosa rugosa endures extreme temperature shifts, drought, wind and salt spray. Expect scented blooms from string to fall accompanied by colorful rose hips that will attract the birds.

Lavender: A hearty plant in most climates, and tolerates sandy soil well. Position the plant in front of your roses for a fragrant walkway. The bushy shrub also hides the bare rose stems.

South American Verbena: This is a nice complement to your lavender with its showy lavender/purple blooms on stems that can extend up to 6 feet tall. Butterflies love this plant.

Daylily: These do well in most climates and have a variety of colors and patterns to choose from. When not in bloom, their grassy foliage makes a nice border.

Hydrangeas: This delicate looking plant is actually a pretty tough cookie and doesn't mind wind and salt. It's wise to plant it in a partially shaded area where it will get the morning sun and afternoon shade. Set up an irrigation drip for this one, hydrangeas don't tolerate drought very well. To keep it blooming, trim off the old flowers as soon as they start to fade.

It all has to do with the amount of acidity in the soil - the more acid, the bluer the flower, the less acid, or more alkaline, and the pinker the bloom. Use aluminum sulfate to increase acidity and dolomitic lime to decrease it.

Juniper: This is a hearty evergreen that adds color and texture to your garden year round. Choose from blue, green or gold foliage, and tall or creeping styles of plant. The low growing selections work well in sandy rock gardens or for erosion control on hilly areas.

Wintercreeper: This is a hearty groundcover that still looks great in the winter with its variegated leaf.

Portulaca: This is a popular plant commonly found along walkways at the beach. You can forget to water it, expose it to wind and sea spray and it will respond with colorful blooms. Its trailing flowers make a nice accent in an ocean facing window box. Although it is an annual, it will generally self seed.

Yarrow: Also considered a herb for its medicinal qualities, yarrow will endure, sun, rain, cold, drought and wind. It comes in a variety of colors such as yellow, orange, pink and white. Plant it in a spot where you can keep an eye on it, yarrow loves to spread its roots and wander.

Gaillardia: This colorful flower blooms from summer to early winter, resists drought and doesn't balk at sandy soil. It's brightly colored blooms attract butterflies and make perfect cut flowers.

Cuphea: This is the new kid on the block and what an interesting plant it is. It has bright red crinkly petals with purple middles that bloom non-stop in the hottest, dryest, salt and wind blown conditions. Keep it moist and fertilized, and you will be assured of constant color all season.

The main species of parrots are:

Large-sized Parrots:

Amazon parrots - medium to large in size. They are mainly green colored with patches of yellow, red, and blue on their tail, wings, and head. They often chatter when there are strangers around and possess very loud voices. The older male Amazons like the hawk-headed parrots can be aggressive.

Cockatoos - compared to Amazons - most of these are big. They are extremely intelligent, sensitive, and nervous birds. They possess erect crests that is lowered and raised at will. They may look cuddly and cute, but adult cockatoos can inflict painful bites if they are not properly trained. Cockatoos demand and require constant attention and are difficult to take care of.

African Gray Parrots are medium to large in size. They are overly sensitive but very intelligent birds. When strangers are around, they are very quiet, however, they can be extremely loud but do not create noise nuisance. Hand-reared parrots are very prone to feather plucking.

Macaws are the largest sized parrot species. The smaller macaws, like Hahn's and the yellow-collared, make good pets, but are noisy. They are active, inquisitive and often very mischievous parrots. They can learn to talk and can be very chatty. Their powerful beaks can damage many items around the house, including furniture and can even crush nuts. They are not very suitable for homes with young children. Large Macaws may also require more space instead of just a bird cage.

If you have large birds, such as the above-mentioned as pets, one should go for a large parrot cage. This should have a bar spacing of one or more inches as inappropriate spacing can result in injury to the bird.

Medium sized Parrots:

Conures are found in South Africa and are very confident and active birds. Sun yellow and bright orange conures, and blue-crowned and Patagonian conures have very loud and piercing voices. They are extremely curious, but very entertaining too. They can talk but possess squeaky thin voices when they try to emulate human speech. Conures are happy to sleep in roosting boxes placed inside the bird cage.

If you have these medium-sized birds, as pets, you should go for parrot cages which have a bar spacing of a half-inch to 5/8 inch.

Small-sized Parrots:

Parakeets are mostly found in Australia and Asia and are leaf-green colored, and are ground-feeders, and spend most of the time on the bird cage floor. Unlike other parrot species, they are quiet birds, although they are very active and social creatures. They live in a large flock and are usually kept as a flock in an aviary. Parakeets are independent birds and do not mix or bond well with humans. They respond to training but are poor mimics and imitators of human voices and speech.

Lovebirds are active and small parrots with short tails and come from Africa. They are usually kept as pets in pairs, as they rarely bond with human beings as many other parrot species do. They emit shrill sounds and can voice calls at a high volume, but they are unable to copy or imitate human speech. Cockatiels and budgies are the commonest parrot-like birds, and they are from Australia. Black Walnut, which has the Scientific or Latin name of Juglans Nigra, is one of the most admired hardwoods in the furniture trade at the present time, especially in the United Kingdom. Prized for its dark brown colour by end users and for its strength, yet high workability by woodworkers, it's no wonder that demand for this hardwood is at an all time high.

As a tree Black Walnut is native to the Eastern regions of the United States and Canada, its region of growth extending from Ontario to Texas and from Florida to Manitoba. It also grows in Europe since being introduced to Europe almost four hundred years ago (1629) however the primary source of timber in Europe is still North America. It primarily grows alongside lowland rivers (due preferring high water tables) in warmer regions, where it attains heights between 30 and 40 metres (100 to 130 feet). The bark is a dark gray, with deep furrows, the leaves has 15-23 leaflets, flowering into catkins or clusters depending on gender.

The hardwood that Black Walnut trees produce has a dark coloured heartwood, which has long been popular in America partly due to it being the darkest of all North American hardwoods, and due to its exception qualities. Thus it was used in great numbers by the early colonists of the United States in their homes. While the expense now puts this extravagance out of reach of the majority of people, individual items of furniture or rooms produced from black walnut, as well as furniture made from veneers are still popular.

Traditionally Black Walnut hardwood was used, among other uses, to manufacture gun stocks, of which still uses a significant proportion of the lumber harvest in the USA. These are often made into profiles by timber product manufacturers to bespoke customer orders. While other timbers are also used for gunstocks, Black Walnut is popular for its various strengths including elasticity and rupture strengths which are significantly higher than Persian Walnut (Scientific or Latin Name: Juglans Regia, also known as European, Common or English Walnut).

Black Walnut is also used to create coffins, especially in America, partly because of the lure of historical figures who have been buried in Black Walnut coffins: Abraham Lincoln, for instance, was buried in a Black Walnut coffin which was covered in a woollen fabric in black and decorated with studs in the pattern of a shamrock. A replica of this coffin is seen by the thousands of visitors to the Museum of Funeral Customs in Springfield, Illinois, many of whom have come for the nearby tomb of Lincoln. Lincoln was not alone to be buried in Black Walnut, the relative abundance of the trees at the time coupled with their finer woodworking qualities and dark, reflecting the sombre mood of funerals, appearance meant that they were a popular choice of coffin at the time – this is reflected in the coffins of various other historical personalities to have been buried in Black Walnut, US president Zachary Taylor, upon reburial the frontierswoman and adopted Seneca Mary Jemison, and executed abolitionist John Brown.

In addition to timber, Black Walnut trees produce Walnuts that are used both in foods such as ice cream, pies, cookies and cakes as well as in cleaning and cosmetic products produced from the shells. It is preferred by many over the nuts from Persian Walnut because of its stronger taste and high protein, unsaturated fat and low cholesterol. However due to the work that must be put in to prepare a black walnut nuts due to a staining fluid in the husk, Persian Walnuts are more widely produced.

My recommendation for a budget-priced new machine is a Kenmore from Sears, they are made by Janome at a little less than the brand name cost. Stay away from the super-cheap models at Walmart, ect. They would probably only frustrate you.

Visit a dealer where you can sit and try the models out. Take some scraps of your own fabric to try on. A good dealer is worth paying a bit more for since you know where you can get it serviced and they often offer classes to learn the machines and can help you when you have difficulties. Check to see if they have a used machine that was a trade in- you may get a better machine at lower cost.

If budget isn't an issue - Bernina is the best machine out there, but they are pricy.

Paul Blanca (c.1958) is a Dutch art photographer who entered the artworld in the begining of the 1980s with his subversive shocking self-portraits. The self-taught Blanca came into touch with the artscene when he met Eva Veldhoen, the daughter of the well-known Dutch painter Aat Veldhoen (1934). The acquaintance with this artistic environment was a real eye-opener for Blanca and shortly after he started photographing, first in color with a small screen camera but very soon after shooting in B&W using a Hasselblad camera (6 X 6 cm).

In 1980 he met the acclaimed choreographer Hans van Manen (1932), who is a meritorious photographer himself and owned a photo studio. Besides their mutual interest in art photography, Van Manen also used Blanca in one of his dance choreographies called Pose in which Blanca performed as a kick-boxer, he was a practitioner of this full-contact sport from the age of 16, surrounded by ballerina's. Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) who was a close friend of Van Manen was very impressed by Blanca's self-portraits and later introduced him to New York's high society (like Keith Haring, Willem de Kooning, Japser Johns, Grace Jones...etc.) stating 'Paul Blanca is my only competitor'. The art collector Bill Katz says in Anthony Haden Guest's True Colors - The Real Life of the Art World on Blanca: "...he reaches a kind of poetry few artists have".

Most of Blanca's self-portraits deal with strong emotions and violent themes like fear, sadness, pain, agression and sexuality exploring his inner demons. Diametrically against this harsh work, there are the sensitive and gentle pictures like the one called Mother and Son (Mapplethorpe's favourite) depicting himself in a tender embrace with his mother, both fully naked, or the portrait holding his newborn son in the air called Father and Son. In 1986 Blanca worked on a book called Timing (edition of 1000) which featured the upcoming Dutch artists of the eighties and his photographs were accompanied by poems of Koos Dalstra (1950). For his touching series Par la Pluie des Femmes (1989) he asked his female models to think of their most traumatic experiences. Together with Hans Gieles and Francis Boeske of the gallery Vous Etes Ici he produced the magnificent Sangre de Toro series in 1991 (see 'Bull's Blood' below). During this time Blanca also started as a research-journalist for the Amsterdam weekly, Nieuwe Revu and the newspaper Het Parool. He wrote about crack and again exploring his own boundaries he started to use it himself, resulting in an addiction. His article for Nieuwe Revu on weapons was the starting point of a downward spiral with him being a suspect in the assault on Rob Scholte in 1995 because of his "knowledge" of grenades. There was a long silence but in 2008 Blanca returned with a project called Mi Mattes photographing the gangmembers hanging around his studio.

Portraits of Purification

Over the years there seems to be an increasing will-power in Blanca's self-portraits. In 1982 he photographed himself With Eelsholding six living eels in his mouth (in his perception a disgusting animal), he looks into the world (at the viewer) with a resigned facial expression like he's thinking "that's how it really goes" with the scavengers fulfilling his wish to immortalization. In Blanca's Selfportrait, Back with Mickey Mouse, the large depiction on his back inflicted with a sharp knife (razor blade) by a befriended tattoo-artist, of Mickey Mouse with his thumbs up and a big smile, like he's saying: "Keep up the good work", is a sceptical statement because the mouse is crying. In his Selfportrait Bull (1982) Blanca becomes, with his painted body disguished as a bull and his agressive facial expression, a disturbed figure. With his erected penis in his left hand and his right hand in a clenched grip, he's looking for an exertion disarming the poetic image. The excessive nature of Blanca's self-portraits serve as a purification and therefore he has to subvert all boundaries and norms.

Bull's Blood

Blanca who had lived and worked in Spain for two years (in the early 90s), had, while there, become obsessed by bullfighting and kept up with all the ferias (local seasonal festivities) to take photographs. To challenge himself emotionally Blanca also participated in a bullfight, not with real bulls but with dangerous vacas(cows) of 850 pounds. It intrigued him that when the corrida (bullfight) was at an end, the bull's meat was served in restaurants but nothing was done with the blood- it is the fluid of life, after all. Blanca investigated whether blood could be used as silk-screen printing-ink. The treated blood was used for the Sangre de Toro port-folio, based on Blanca's photos. Pressing the ink through the screen only once produced no more than a light pink colour, and in the end 35 'pulls' were needed to achieve the darkest tone in the pictures, creating a visible relief. The series forms a high point on the periphery of Blanca's photographic work. For the affecionades(devotees) it is a must, for opponents of bullfighting it is also a monument of beauty.

If not, then you should be.

LCD monitors are a great way to save space and get high resolution graphics without the bulk, or lead, of a CRT monitor. However, LCD monitors do have drawbacks. One of these is what people call a "dead pixel." Basically, a dead pixel appears as a small black spot on your screen. A stuck pixel can also appear black, though it can also be blue, green or red, as well.

The difference between a dead pixel and stuck pixel is subtle (that is to non-techies), but it is important to note. A stuck pixel can usually be fixed, while a dead pixel can be the result of failed hardware and may not be able to be fixed. Either way, attempting the repair of your monitor, or monitors, will help you decide which it is. There are actually several ways in which to do this.

Massaging, Pressing or Tapping:

1. Turn off power to the monitor. If you are using a laptop, you'll need to turn off the entire machine.
2. Put gentle pressure on the dead pixel with your finger or the end of a pencil eraser. If you're worried about smudges or scratches, get a clean damp cloth. Protect your screen while doing this and do not apply too much pressure.
3. Turn the power back on.
4. Gently rub the spot where the dead pixel is located, until the color begins to change. You may need to do this for anywhere from several minutes to several times within an hour. A variation of this method is to gently tap the area where the pixel is located, with a black background in place. And remember, always be gentle with the screen or you will cause more damage.
5. When the pixel is repaired, use a white background to make sure that it is the right color.

Color Flashing:

1. Download a freeware color flashing program. These are specifically designed to stimulate the dead pixel, as well as those around it. One such program is a small, rapidly flashing square, which can be dragged over the pixel.
2. Leave the program running for at least 1 hour. If, at the end of that hour, the pixel is still stuck or dead, you may need to use a full screen version and let it run for as much as half a day (12 hours).

It is very important to understand that none of these methods is guaranteed to work. Trial and error may give you the results that you want, but you might just be stuck with that annoying dead pixel. Also, if you're going to try to send your monitor in for replacement under warranty, understand that a dead pixel is not considered grounds for replacement by most manufacturers.

Of course, many users are not bothered by a dead pixel, especially if you have dual monitors or one large monitor and that dead or stuck pixel is just one in a sea of pixels and space. It helps, however, to start out with a quality LCD Monitor, so make sure you purchase a trusted brand. HP LCD Monitors, Samsung LCD Monitors, and Sony LCD Monitors are just a few of the reliable brands. Remember, if it's some off-name brand you've never heard of and the price seems too good to be true, it is. If you do run in to a stuck or dead pixel, try the instructions above and there's a decent chance you'll revive the pixel.

Last week in a TV appearance, our President was showing a little gray over the ears.  Immediately the pundits starting talking about how the stress of the White House position was already taking a toll on our young President.

There's no question about it – Barack Obama's job is stressful.  Probably no one would debate the fact that it's the MOST stressful job in the USA.

But is he graying because of the job?  Or is he graying because one of his enzyme anti-oxidants is depleted?

The cells in our bodies make several powerful anti-oxidants.  When those are strong and working together our immune systems easily ward off diseases, we feel better, and get better sleep. 

Glutathione, the body's foremost antioxidant is the quarterback.  The backfield is then made up of the other three – Catalase, CoQ-10, and Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD.) These 4 anti-oxidants have been likened to the backfield of a great football team.

Now a team of European researchers are theorizing that the depletion in our Catalase enzyme could be a cause of graying hair.   As you know, anti-oxidants are used by the body to remove dangerous toxins in the body, and maintain our body's chemical balance.  One of the tasks of Catalase is to break down hydrogen peroxide in the body.   When Catalase levels are low, hydrogen peroxide levels are high.

These scientists realized that gray hair is simply the absence of pigment.  They knew that every hair cell makes a little hydrogen peroxide, but over time it builds up in the hair follicles.   They discovered that this buildup ended in blocking the normal synthesis of the natural pigment in the hair, called melanin.

So our hair bleaches itself from the inside out as the hydrogen peroxide builds up and blocks our black, brown, red, or auburn pigments.

"Therefore, President Obama, it may not be the stress of the job that is graying your temples.  Rather it's a low Catalase level!"
