What is the name of the guitarist who plays latin (tango/salsa) versions of pieces of classical music ?

He regularly has videos featured on classic fm. One of his songs include moonlight sonata by beethoven. His videos often feature a boy and a girl dancing latin dances such as salsa and meringuez etc.
He is a solo guitarist.

The first time is always the hardest and even though private instruction is just that, private, ballroom dancing group classes are not really that intimidating. Most people you'll find in these sorts of groups are extremely encouraging and friendly. However if you're really shy then private instruction is the way to go. With all the TV coverage it's really got people saying I want to do that.

Sequence and New Vogue dancing is easy to learn. You start with easy ones and then progress to the more difficult amalgamations. Since the exposure of dance in the media dancing in all types and styles (i:e: ballroom dancing, Waltz, Cha Cha, Salsa etc) has really taken off. Dance classes have increased dramatically and people want more. There are over one hundred sequence dances and more are being created and published via the UK, finally reaching the Australian shores. Here in Australia we have tended to take on British ballroom dancing from our early origins and have taken their dance styles through to today. Sequence dancing has taken on the same rhythms from the ballroom such as Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Jive or Swing. Some of the sequences dances to name, just a few, Georgella Blues, Saunter Together, Glen Roy Foxtrot, Georgella Blues, Mayfair Quickstep, Melody Foxtrot, Ragtime Swing, Rumba One.

There are many places around Australia to learn all these dances, one particular non profit organization is the Ulladulla District Dance Group Inc. This organization has been going now for more than 30 years in the Ulladulla south coast NSW area. They have been successful in promoting the best and most attended sequence ball (held in May) in NSW and on the south coast. Many couples drive long distances to enjoy this great night out and spend the weekend in this beautiful town and catch up with all their friends from Canberra, Sydney and even Bega. Ulladullla is a famous fishing town it's beautiful harbour and friendly people make it a great get away for dancers to visit for the weekend after they dance their feet off at this fabulous dance ball. Other activities include a Friday night class before the big event, this gives many people time to catch up on there busy lives before the big night. The attendance has been stronger than ever since it started more than 10 years ago, with great music from a great band and organised with the best leadup work, which is why so many people to repeatedly book every year.

You can scout around in all cities for ballroom dance studios that teach these styles, your local area may have a studio. They may also include other styles of dance and this is quite common because of the variety people demand. Every studio may offer different styles so it's best to contact them before making any commitments, each business will have different priced dance programs. Enjoy!

How is ballroom dancing judged when everyone is doing something different?

I mean, I've watched actual ballroom dance competitions on public television , and also the movie 'Shall We Dance?' What I would like to know is why are each set of dance partners doing something different, and how can the judges see it all?

They are judged based on their technique, artistism, and sportsmanship. They are judged on how well they are dancing the steps they chose. Even though the steps appear different, there are basic technical points that make the dancing look good ot bad, advanced or beginner-ish.
Judges are familiar with all the steps that are out there in the ballroom dance, and from the "sampler" steps that the couple shows they can judge their overall skill level.

A couple that dances really nicely but purposely bumps into other couples might not get recalled to the next round. "Shall We Dance" movie presents a distorted picture in this regard. Dancers are usually pretty nice to each other on the dance floor either because they are simply nice people or because everyone can see what's going on, and being mean doesn't look good. Despite what the movie showed, competitors are usually good friends among each other.

Yes, it always amazed me that in 90 seconds or less, judges can see it all. High level competition have 7 or more judges working at a time, and amazingly enough, their marks are usually similar. When I watch judges work, I notice that most of them are done marking the couples in the fist 20 seconds of dancing, not even 90 seconds.

If you really do not feel like dancing in public yet, you can get a dance DVD. Close all the curtains and dance your heart out, no one can see you. Once you feel more confident you can join a class.

The coolest way, though is with dancing video games. If you have the consoles and all the rest this is really an option you will love. The games have easy levels that will give you a slow paced workout and you can move on as you get fitter.

So, there you have a good fun way to lose fat from legs. Try it, put your heart in it and you will see results very soon.

There are differences in the Ballroom and Latin styles of each dance some are faster than others with different music and rhythms. With the Ballroom i.e. Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep, it has been known from the competition Dancesport field that with the arms raised the heart does get more of a workout than with the Latin dances. However with the faster speeds of Jive, Swing and Salsa can easily produce the same result.

Your lungs will get plenty of oxygen which makes the heart work easier, thus allowing you to enjoy longer dance sessions. The quick breaths create a stronger heart and allowing the levels to rise (in between dances) and fall creates conditioning making the night of party dancing fulfilling without being tired and stopping prematurely before the party's over. As we use muscles we never thought we had, the body starts to tone and excess flab will dissipate with regular dance classes and social ballroom and Latin events. Is Dominican style salsa different than other salsa dancing?

Are there many kinds of salsa dancing? my friend said there is cuban, dominican and ballroom salsa styles. If there are different kinds of salsa, are they very different from each other? and how?

Sorry this is going to be kind of long and yet I'm trying hard to be very brief.

Yes there are many kinds of salsa dancing and Dominicans dance somewhat differently from salsa dancers in other countries. The Dominican Republic is the home of merengue and bachata, and that affects their dance style for salsa. If you look for bachata videos and then look for Dominican style bachata videos you will see that the way Dominicans dance bachata is different from the way other people do. Dominicans dance the original way and the club style taught in other countries is much more exaggerated and focuses on being "sexy" rather than on cool steps and turn patterns.

But back to salsa...mambo is *not* the daddy of all latin dances. Latin dances such as merengue, bachata, cumbia, vallenato, plena, rumba etc are completely unrelated to mambo. So their are plenty of latin dances that have developed on their own. And in fact mambo developed out of són, which is the *real* daddy of all modern Cuban popular dance styles, and also the daddy of salsa dancing IMO.

You have to keep in mind that each latin dance has it's matching music style. So mambo dance is done to mambo music, merengue is danced to merengue music and són is danced to són music. Each time a new music style was invented, the people found new ways to dance, for example chachacha developed from the montuno section of the danzón and supposedly got it's name from the sound made by ladies high heels when they did the little shuffle step.

The word "salsa" is something that only came into use in the 1970s.
Almost no salsa is mambo these days musically speaking and the dance that people call "mambo" doesn't bear a lot of resemblance to what mambo was in the 1950s. If you think of salsa as a "sauce", which is actually what the word means in Spanish, the base ingredient in almost all salsa music is són or guaracha, like the tomato sauce. Almost no mambo is used in salsa today. You hear that mostly in the old salsa from the 50-60 stuff like Tito Puente. What happened was that in the 1950s there was a "mambo" craze in the United States and the name "mambo" stuck in peoples’ minds.

The history of salsa music and dance is basically as follows: In the late 1800s early 1900s in eastern Cuba the music style known as "són" developed from an earlier music called "changüí". Són was originally a sort of "rural music" but in the 40s Arsenio Rodriguez modernized and popularized the music and it became a big hit in Havana and spread around the world including to New York.

There was a big wave of Cuban music styles in the 40s-50s (son, guaracha, mambo, chachacha, pachanga, bolero). In New York the latino musicians began mixing son, guaracha etc with jazz. The name "latin jazz" was used to refer to the music. As time passed musicians mixing in bits of other rhythms form their home countries as well, so if we go back to the sauce metaphor, these were like the spices that you add to the tomato sauce to give it a special flavor. Then finally in the 70s the name salsa started being used for this "mixture" of rhythms.

So anyway, salsa music and dance developed from Cuban music and dance styles but each country has it's distinct version of the music/dance which depends on what they choose to mix with the main ingredient of son/guaracha and what other dance influences are prevalent in the country/city.

The main salsa dance styles today are:
New York Style, LA Style, Cuban Style and Colombian. Style. These styles are all taught at salsa congresses around the world. I have never seen Dominican Style marketed anywhere, although I have seen Dominicans dance salsa, and it was different from the other styles. I don't really count ballroom as a style because it is only used for ballroom dancing competitions and people don't dance it at clubs and parties.

There are two basic ways in which salsa dancing differs: 1) the beat you dance on and 2) the direction of the movement in the dance

Most salsa dancing is done "On1" meaning the people dance on the downbeat of the song, i.e. they take their first step on the first beat.

In New York there is a version of salsa where they emphasize the second beat, or the upbeat, even though they still start dancing on1. This is usually called NY On2.

Then there is the type of dancing where you actually pause on the first beat and start dancing on the 2. This type of On2 is called contratiempo or "palladium style" referring to the way people danced at the Palladium in New York in the 50s.

It might be interesting to know that all the original dance styles from Cuba were danced contratiempo: son, mambo, guaracha, changüí, chachacha.

The other difference is the direction of the movement. In the United States the motion is in a straight line or "in the slot". People refer to this as slot dancing or in-line dancing. One result of this is that the turns are usually 360 degrees and this leads to a lot of spinning in the dance. In Cuba and to some extent in South America, the direction of the motion is rotational as if the couple were moving around the edge of a circle or the woman may move in a circle around the man who may stay at the center of the circle. Since there are almost no 360 degree turns, the moves tend to be more of a complex, tangly nature where the couples seems to get all tangled up but then smoothly manages to untangle. This is not possible to do without the rotation.

And finally here are some videos of the different styles so you can see for yourself. Also pay attention to the music and you will hear that the dancers like different types of salsa music.

NY ON2 (slot style - classic 70s style salsa music)

LA ON1 (slot style more or less plus lots of flash and acrobatics a mix of music including salsa romantica)

This couple also dances afro-cuban rumba during the percussion breaks, when they stop the turn patterns and dance side by side. Also notice that the music uses a lot of funk in the synth pattern and the horns.

Colombian Style ON1 (lots of emphasis on footwork - fast music)
these guys seem to use some dips and stuff you'd see in LA style.

Here are some of the original dance styles that led up to "salsa".

Mambo as it was originally danced. You can hear that mambo music isn't the same thing as what you typically hear at salsa clubs these days, but this is genuine mambo dance/music

Són ON2 contratiempo
You clearly see that they dance pause 2,3,4 pause 6,7,8 and this is very similar to although less complex than modern salsa.

Chachacha ON2 contratiempo

And just as an added bonus here is afro-cuban rumba. As you can see it is percussion and voices only. It is a great way for people to learn to move their bodies and to learn to improvise.

Difference between Latin American dancing and Salsa?

i dont know witch one to take up.

Latin American dances are Cha cha, Paso Doble, Jive, Samba and Rumba. Salsa is under the umbrella of Street Latin, which also includes dances like Argentine Tango, Bachata, Lambada, Merengue, etc. They're different styles and as such require different techniques.

Actually, Salsa isn't an International Latin dance, and since International Latin and Latin American are the same thing, it's not a Latin American dance, it's Street Latin.

Here is a great opportunity for all of the independent music bands! Do two women ever perform ballroom or tango dancing on stage?

I know this may sound like some "lesbian" question but it's not. I love the art of ballroom dancing (I love dancing in general). However, I rarely see two girls dancing together. Is there some kind of set-standard regarding dance partners?

There isn't any restriction preventing women from dancing together. When women learn to dance, they are primarily taught to follow. The only time you see women who are able to lead are those who have been dancing for a while and are interested in either learning more or teaching. So these women start to learn what the men are normally taught.

I find in the ballroom world that many women just do not want to have to think so much. They would rather just be led and have fun.
