Consumers demanding that the traders they let into their homes are vetted and monitored before they employ them have helped fuel a recent surge in membership of the West Sussex-based firm Checkatrade.com.

The company has seen an increase in membership of over 100% this year from 1000 members in February 2007 to over 2000 members at the end of March 2008, making it the best year for growth in the company's ten year history.

Checkatrade founder and CEO Kevin Byrne commented: "It took nine years for us to achieve a membership of 1000 traders willing to be vetted and continuously monitored. The next 1000 members only took one year. This proves to me that there is a demand

from consumers for traders who are reliable, honest and trustworthy and who can prove their credentials."

Kevin also pointed out that all members of Checkatrade go through a stringent vetting process, which includes identity checks and the taking of references. All members must have current Public Liability Insurance and must also be able to produce proof of any relevant qualifications. "We believe that it is this process, and the publishing of customer feedback on our website,both positive and negative, that gives greater credibility to our members in the eyes of the public."

To date over 100,000 customer feedback forms have been received by Checkatrade, who process an average of 3,500 cards a month at present. This figure is increasing as consumers become more aware and careful of whom they choose to do work in their homes. The company estimates that their members are gaining over 300,000 jobs a year from the Checkatrade system, generating around £150 million worth of work in local communities. The aim, Kevin said, "is to keep work in the hands of the honest and reliable and to close the door on rogue traders".

With over 6000 unique visitors a day to its website, Checkatrade remains on the cutting edge of consumer protection with innovative software, processes and benefits for their members.

There are also lots of battenburg and belgian lace parasols on ebay, though they are not UV treated, and if the lace is too open, it won't protect you from the sun as much.

For dancing these two programmes Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars have been instrumental in getting dancing out to the masses.
Come Dancing was actually one of televisions longest running shows but towards the end of its life in 1998, popularity had severely dropped. It was deemed tacky and boring. The rooms seemed poorly lit in the halls the dancers were performing in and it looked very dated. The problem was, once Come Dancing had come off the air, there was no form of ballroom or Latin dancing shown on the television in the UK.

Strictly Come Dancing was first shown in 2004 and has grown and grown to become one of the most viewed television programmes on the BBC. Also spawning the magazine show Strictly Come Dancing It Takes Two with Claudia Winkleman. The show has made ballroom and Latin dancing cool again basically. They use modern music to dance to, use different dance steps combined with the classic and required dance steps and add lots of entertainment.
The celebrity aspect of course is a big draw for viewers. Many people root for their favourite star should they be a sportsman or woman in the field they like or their favourite soap star.

The costumes are an extremely large part of the show, so much so that they get individually discussed on the It Takes Two programme on a Friday. All professional dancers understand the effect a costume has on a dance for many reasons.

Dance costumes are specifically designed and constructed to aid the dancer in each particular dance, to be comfortable, unrestrictive and enhance the dancer's for the dance. Dance is such a visual sport that costumes do play a huge role and they also help the dancer get into the role within the routine. A ballroom costume for example will be flowing and give a graceful feel whilst an argentine tango costumes will be fitted and more revealing to match the style of the dance. Dance costumes are now far more comfortable and allow for far more movement today. Lycra and other technical fabrics allow the costumes designer to design the most intricate and show stopping clothing. You only need to look at the latest televisions programmes for this.

Colour plays a huge role in the look of the costumes which then, in turn, can portray a different image of the dance. A classic and beautiful waltz costume would suit a pastel shade whereas for a fiery tango, it would be red or black for example, most definitely not a pastel shade. It is rare to see a dance costume made fully in a patterned fabric. A patterned fabric can distort the body and in competitive dance, it can hinder dancers as the judge cannot correctly see the alignment of the body.

When discussing dance costumes, the main focus is on usually on the female costume but male costumes are just as important albeit more understated. It is very important for the male costumes to complement the females in style and often a hint of the same colour is integrated into the male costume as well. A man's costume must enable him to lift the female if the dance requires it and in routines where he must slide along the floor, knee protection pads for example need to be added. Shirts need to be secured so that they do not untuck.
